KL Bucket List - Honourable Mention!

Whilst this is not one of my mainstay breakfast foods during my time in Malaysia, it is still very tasty, and a welcome alternative to my usual fare once in a while. It will certainly be something I will struggle to get in country NSW, so when I went out for milk this morning, and 7-11 happened to be next to a mamak, I couldn't resist!

Mamaks are a staple of Malaysian culture. Many open 24 hours, and all the others probably at least 18 hours. There will generally be one on each block almost. They serve halal food, and it is generally Indian influenced, if not straight out Indian. But usually most of the Malay favourites are there; nasi lemak, mee goreng, nasi ayam, roti canai, etc.

The food is cheap, served swiftly, and with no fuss. It's a good place to eat pretty much any meal, but for me, particularly breakfast. Chances are though, the nasi lemak I will get for my bucket list entry will be from a street vendor, which is the way I generally like to buy that delicacy!

Today however, I wanted roti. As I said, it's not on the bucket list, but it is still a damn good food. I ordered 2 x roti telur and 1 x roti cheese today. Roti is essentially an Indian pancake, light thin batter, fried and served with dhal and/or curry sauce. Roti canai is the basic version. Telur means egg in Malay, which is what I opted for today, and the cheese one was just for something different. My wife and little girl both enjoyed that one.

Here it is served up and ready to eat. So three of us ate for RM7, or just over $2 Aussie. Simple, but yummy, and I'm glad I took the opportunity to try it again before we go.
